Woodson, Stolen Legacy, and John Henrik Clarke, Dr. Amos N.  March 7, 2009

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA – UBUS Communications Systems, the “trail blazing” premier Independent Black Publisher announce the 19th presentation of Black Book Awards for Excellence in Black Literature. As per the prior 19 “validation and celebration of books that are written by, for or about Black people,” the first weekend in June is reserved as a holiday for Black Writers, publishers, printers, vendors and other sellers and buyers of Black literature.

It is not accidental or coincidental that Black Book Awards are presented on the same weekend as the ABA, the Caucasian trade organization that operates to celebrate white literature. But as usual a number of new Black writers will go o the ABA, rather than to Southampton County and celebrate Black literature.

“This is ok for new Black writers,” said H. Khalif Khalifah, the Founder of UBUS, and host for an event that is estimated to have presented Black Book Awards for more than 500 individuals – 95% of whose work has never been cited anyplace on the planet. Not because it was not good, or deserving enough, but because no one have the vision and good business sense to institutionalize and event that is also a great promotion opportunity for Black Writers.

“It is ok for new Black writers because many may not have gotten the word about Black Book Awards, or, are still of the mindset that THEIR work will be the exception to what the ABA is established to do. They witness that 99% of the citations and celebration is of white literature at the ABA. Many come to us the following years.”  Continued Khalifah.

But according to Khalifah, other, otherwise ‘conscious’ black people will also go to ABA, or not come to Southampton County during Black Literature Weekend. They are simply not independently minded to the degree necessary to appreciate the effort; or do not want their work to cited by a 100% Black organization.

BLACK LUMINARIES HAVE BEEN CITED

Everyone will not appreciate Black Book Awards, but many of the most renown Black individuals in history have attended, been “hugged up” celebrated and received the awards. The prelude to the now institution was the 1st “Harlem Literary and Arts Festival, October 1 & 2, 1977. The Guest Speakers were: Prof John Henrik Clark, Dr. Y. ben Jochanan, Imam Ali Rasheed, Simon Bly Jr., Prof Preston Wilcox, Poets Eugene Reynolds, Rich Bartee, James McRae, Publisher Robert T. Davis, Sister Yetunde & etc.

In 1978, Legendary Queen Mother Moore and Dr. Amos N. Wilson were two of the main speakers. No awards were presented at the first two. But after relocating to Virginia - building the Black Book Industry into a “Movement,” in the 1980’s, in 1991 the celebration of Black Literature received its first institutional presentation of Citations and celebration in a comprehensive way.

Awards for “Best New Writer,” “Best Book of the Year – fiction and non-fiction,” “Publisher of the Year,” “Distributor of the Year,” and etc. have been awarded. Since that year the following are among the Black writers who have received awards: Sister Sharazad Ali, Dr. Tony Martin, Frances Cress Welsing, Dr. Imari Obadele, Sister Johnita Obadele, Dr. Edward Smalls Jr., Sister Amuntyt Judy Carter Khalifah, Nation of Islam, C.R.O.E., Omar Tyree, Marva Cooper, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Adib Rashad, Dr. Kamau Kambon, John F. Hatchett, Yusef Abdul Salaam, Amir Fatir, Latif Tarik, Keidi Awadu, Dr. Henry N. Anderson, Mr. Carol Barnes, Gloria Taylor Edwards, Brother Lumumba Odinga, Ibn Khalifah, Moi Collier and too many others to name – more are listed at www.blackbooksaward.com

All activities during Black Literary Weekend are at the Khalifah’s Estates in Southampton County, Virginia. That is all except for the last day when Khalifah leads the writers, families and friends on a “Return to the Nat Turner Trail.” In fact, Khalifah’s Estates is located at the Birthplace of Nat Turner. At the least, that is the legend in the County.

One thing for certain, Nat Turner, Slaved, Preached and Planned the most dynamic Revolt in Black History on the land of Khalifah’s Estates. The Black Book Awards not only celebrate Black literature, but it also helps to authentic, celebrate and preserve the history of Nat Turner. Revenues generated during the weekend contribute to the building of The Nat Turner Slave Museum, The Khalifah world class Library, Discount Black Bookstore and the Nat Turner Gift Shop.

NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER YOUR PUBLICATION

Any books that have not been cited in the past are eligible to receive an award. If your book has been previously cited, it still may qualify to be celebrated and validated for other awards of recognition. If your book is out of print, you still have time to have Khalifah arrange a small, reasonable print run of 10 books. In any event, if you are a Black writer, family, friend or reader of Black literature, mingling for 3 days or less with some average of 3 dozen writers is quite exciting.

If you have written a book and need publishing or printing information, call Khalifah at (704) 277-1462 – tune in to Khalifah Booknotes Radio presentations, every Wednesday 7 pm to 9 pm. www.harambeeradio.com

PRESENTATION OF "BLACK BOOK AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN INDEPENDENT WRITING

June 10, 2007

2007 BLACK BOOK AWARDS REPORT
WEBCASTED FOR THE FIRST TIME

By The Newport Newservice

JUNE 10, 2007

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA – The 16th presentation of the Black Book Awards for Excellence in Independent Literature is history. It became history when Greg Tillery of Hello World.com signed off in the spacious library at Khalifah’s Holistic Health Retreat, on June3, 2007.
The ending came after the Founder of libradio.com, Keidi Obi Awadu and Mr. Tillery completed the business workshop explaining and advising the writers of how to use and apply “cutting edge technology to their efforts to be successful as independent Black writers.”

Black Literary Weekend had opened on Friday evening June 1 with a round-table, open discussion, mic about a range of relevant topics about the condition and liberation of Black people. Guests to the Health Ranch to attend the “reception of early arrivals” were present. They included Sister Shahrazad Ali, Dr. Henry N. Anderson, Brother Sayif Mujahada Sanyika Brother Keidi Obi Awadu, Mr. Greg Tillery, Mr. Robert Duncanson, and hosts H. Khalif Khalifah and his daughter Alike Hazzieh Khalifah. Sister Shahrazad’s Grandson Hassan Ali and Khalifah’s Grand daughter, Ahyannah Khalifah were also present.

SHAHRAZAD ALI UNSPOKEN CO-HOST

The conference officially opened Saturday morning with a prayer, singing of the Black National Atham and an opening statement by H. Khalif Khalifah. While Sister Shahrazad Ali supervised the food preparation with Alike, the writers presented “Mini-workshops,” about their work; signed and sold books. The ones from the previous night were joined by Dr. Kamau Kambon and his wife Mawiah, Allah Jihad, Mauricio, Dr. Frederick V. Newsome and a host of others.

As per the previous 15 events, this was one of the estimated 40 conferences UBUS has sponsored over the years to “authenticate, validate and celebrate Black literature,” the writer presentations was followed by a Holistic Health Workshop. Unfortunately the scheduled renowned Dr. Laliah O. Afrikan could not be present. But Dr. Mawiah Kambon and Dr. Henry N. Anderson, with timely input by Dr. Frederic Newsome presented Holistic Health information that is sure to contribute mightily to the wholeness of Black people.

After a break in proceedings, the gathering reassembled and heard what was, perhaps, the most important information for the convening journalist. This was a most informative workshop about copyright protection by none other than Sister Shahrazad Ali. As usual the Saturday Awards Banquet featured a keynote speech by one of the Awardees. Dr. Kamau Kambon was the 2007 reciptient of “The Book of the Year” for this book titled “The Last Book.” The Last Book is a succinct and dire warning to wake up Black People about our demise if we don’t “find a final solution to stop the ethnic cleansing of Black People.”

Other awardees were: Dr. Frederick N. Newsome received the John Henrik Clarke award for his historical, deeply researched book, “The Philosophy of African American Medicine.” Dr. Henry N. Anderson received “The Carter G. Woodson” award for doing the most to “re-educate Black people.” Dr. Anderson is the founder of Los Angeles Community College, a world known lecturer of holistic healing, author of several books, publisher of magazines and his monumental book, “The Nature and Purpose of Disease,” has give us pause and reflection on the uses the human body uses of dis-ease to strengthen our Immune Systems.

The awards were rounded off with the presentation to Brother Keidi Obi Awadu of the Ida B. Wells award for his leadership and advances in protecting black people, using cutting edge technology to keep us informed on libradio.com. “Book of the Year for Holistic Healing” was presented to Brother Sayif Mujahada. Sayif’s book dwelve deeply within to help in the healing of the heart and minds of Black people.

Personal Awards were given to Khalifah and His Wife, Sister Amuntyt Soshen Khalifah for their continuing service to Black people. Sister Shahrazad Ali was given only the third ever of, the “Reda Faard Khalifah Forging Ahead Award,” as she is, besides being the most successful independent Black writer of her generation, Mrs Ali is also an inspiration for those struggling to overcome of life challenges. She does so by holding fast to “the life giving teachings of the Messenger of Allah, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

2007 Book Awards were given to Allah Jihad, his book called “The Immortal Birth” was published in 2007. It will be eligible for an award in 2008. Black Book Awards was also given to Mauricio Henderson, Adrain Bailey, Alike H. Khalifah and her Sister Nadirah Uhuru Khalifah.

Khalifahs’ oldest daughter out of Brooklyn, New York, Songstress Khadijah Carter and her daughter Deja was present but did not perform..

For the first time in history, the Black Book Awards was broadcast around the world. It was video streamed from start to finish. It can be viewed from the archives of www.libradio.com and at www.helloworld.com (Greg Tillery).

The third day of the weekend was reserved for a “return visit to the Nat Turner Trail.” A down pour of rain Sunday morning was partly the cause for the downsizing of the tour. But the tour was conducted via a van.

Press Lease for the 2005 Presentations:
The 15 th annual "Black Book Awards" will be in Charlotte, North Carolina June 3 & 4, 2005. For fifteen years, United Brothers Communications Systems (UBCS) have sponsored a gathering of Black writers, their families and friends by presenting "awards for excellence in Black Literature." Though UBCS have changed it’s name to KHABOOKS.COM the objectives of the Black Book Awards is the same: create a promotion opportunity for independently published Black literature.
The gathering of Black published and aspiring writers is a promotion opportunity that also helps to validate the best books that are written by, for or about Black people. Published books from June to June are cited with nominations in several different categories. The ‘best book’ in each category is then selected as the winner. Each book nominated will receive a certificate that is suitable for framing. And the winner in each category will receive a plaque or trophy with the name of the writer and the book’s title engraved.
The awards are presented at an evening banquet. During the day, the writers are afforded an opportunity to speak about their work, their experiences in having their writings printed into a book. It is still not too late to submit books for consideration.
The course of the event is over three days: 1) Friday evening reception and open microphone for early arrivals. Participants are asked to cite a joke or read a poem. While keeping in mind that everything during the weekend is designed to showcase them and their work.
Distributors, Black publishing houses and newspapers are also cited during the weekend. This is important for publishers because it gives them an opportunity to meet aspiring writers. It is important for booksellers because it affords them an opportunity to see what is new and best in the industry.
On the third day of what the sponsors call "Black Literary Weekend," A bus tour is planned for a "return to the Nat Turner Trail." However, participants can pick and choose whatever parts they would like to attend. UBCS/khabooks.started in Harlem, NY over 30 years ago. They have independently published 350 different titles that were written by some 325 writers. Many of the writers will be present.

DECEMBER FAST DECLARED BY
 THE HONORABLE
ELIJAH MUHAMMAD
by H. Khalif Khalifah

-----------------------
12/1/07

This is to say to all within my reach that I still observe the fast that was declared by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I have observed the month of December to varying degrees of success for 33 years. I always attempt to participate in it 100% through my every word, act and deed. And though this is an impossibility, the striving have help keep me as close to the straight and narrow path that I am. I have been abundantly blessed by Allah when I forget, go into error or make a mistake. And I have concluded that the grea-test blessing of all is that I turn to The Creator, Sustainer and Cherisher of all persons, places and things for help. So after 33 years of striv-ing, I believe I am in the position in life that I have the best chance of being 100% dutiful dur-ing this month I pray for success for everyone who is participating, ob-serving or sensitive to Black Muslims during this time. Ultimately, I  fast for the power to be a better servant to African people, as we continue to struggle for “Freedom, Justice and Equality”………..Peace, Khalifah, December 1, 2007 I www. reparationswarchest.com
"A BRIEF HISTORY OF N'COBRA & THE REPARATIONS MOVEMENT" - 270 pages, more than 30 photos. $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping to

New Book About N'COBRA and the Reparations Movement
A History of N'COBRA and the Reparations Movement, by H. KHALIF KHALIFAH, is first published book about the Coalition that put Reparations in the minds, hearts of many, and lips of people in the U. S. A. and around the world. It is the first Book that is written about N'COBRA by one of it's leaders during the peak of its growth in the 1990's.

Khalifah served on the National Board of Directors for six years, was Co-Chair of the Human Services Commission for five years, Facilitated a Media Workshop that conceptionalized and formulated the N'Cobra listserv, served with Dr. Obadele and Cicero Love on the first Economic Development Commission (a workshop /committee, at the time) and was the co-ordinator for the 9th Annual Reparations Convention in Hampton, and Southampton, Virginia in 1998.

His book is illustrated with multiple, color pictures to highlight many of the 16 Conventions of N'COBRA; and also contains a good chronicle of Past Conventions. It is 230 pages and cost $15.00. Go to www.khabooks.com

As U.S. political, civil and business leaders grappled with the pressing question of "what to do with the Negroes?" the newly freed Africans cried out immediately for restitution - payback for centuries of stolen labor, cultural degradation and dehumanizations. Indeed, Africans held as slaves have been struggling for a restored sense of wholeness since being brought to this country as chattel.

Other organizations and individuals have carried the demand for reparations farther into the twentieth century. Many of them have become a part of today's Reparations Campaign which is being spearheaded by N'COBRA.
