SEARCHING FOR THE CURE & TREATMENT FOR
POST TRAUMATIC SLAVERYDISORDER?
Until Reparations Are Paid Something Must Be Done In Interim: Waiting For Reparations is NOT An Option

By H. Khalif  Khalifah

AUGUST 29, 2010

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - For the “conscious” Blackman or Blackwoman, it is fair to say we have a certain degree of understanding that the present era contains all the things our Ancestors Prayed for; and what Prophets and Sages told us would be in our future: We know that the “Future is Now,” and that we are in possession of everything that is needed to live and be successful in this era. But in an era of opportunity, Black people are slow to claim; or properly use the opportunities to advance the Race. PTslaveryD (Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder is the disease that is the overall cause for this deficiency).

As does everything else in life, consciousness comes in degrees. The reason why some of us are more successful than others is because we have been told how and what to do, or have uncovered ways to prepare ourselves for  opportunities and to avoid the pitfalls and devastation that will also always be there.

The dilemma is many have the knowledge about the pitfalls and the opportunities, yet may not be successful or happy with apparent success in life. This must be explained in ways, by means whereby we’ll get a deeper/better understanding of the knowledge that is so prevalent: the understanding will render us the wisdom to use the essence that is in the knowledge. So the barrier is not that we don’t have knowledge. We have plenty of that.

From personal experience and observation (study/research) we understand that the best way to share ways to do anything in the face of challenges, is to define the them. We submit that Black people have survived the ills of our condition, but have by and large not clearly defined the barrier that stands between us and success, success as individuals, as well as good, freedom striving people. We get close but not close enough to claim our Freedom, Justice and Equality.

DEFINING THE CHALLENGE: POST TRAUMATIC SLAVERY

DISORDER: CAUSE: THE CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY

Since all the forecasts for Black people surround the challenge to overcome the Crime Against Humanity that cause us to be steeped in Chattel Slavery, Second-Class Citizenship and other forms of oppression for this long, let me jump right into the main malady that handicap our efforts to successfully overcome the challenge. As far as I am concerned this malady is the key to obtaining the strength to defeat it.

For those who need to know, the Crime Against Humanity is the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade that all nations who had the ability and opportunity, indulged in after Africans were captured in wars defending our homeland from the invaders.

I’ll also say at the outset that the “main” malady we struggle against is a disease called Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder; or, if you prefer, Post Traumatic Slavery Syndrome.

DEFINITIONS:

Disorder: 1. “to disturb the order of” 2. “to disturb the regular or normal functions of

Syndrome:  1.“a group of symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition

2. “a set of concurrent things (as emotions or actions) that usually form a pattern

THE BEST OF TIME & THE WORST OF TIMES

IS IN THE HERE AND NOW

If Black people were of one accord that we ALL have the disease of Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder, the main purpose of this article would be easy to write/understand; and with the Wisdom derived from the Understanding, the individual would use the wisdom to treat the disease. But since this is not the case – for a myriad of reasons – the main of which is the overgrowths, so to speak, of the symptoms since the cause of the disease happened so long ago. The symptoms have been so pervasive and ill treated, or mistreated, they have been incorporated into the psychic make up of Black people.

According to a pioneering book on the subject, “Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder: Definitions, Diagnosis, and Treatment,” by Omar G. Reid, Psy.D, Sekou Mims, M.Ed., MSW, LCSW and Larry Higginbottom, MSW, LCSW. After making  a easily understood point that most ailments of Black people are actually the symptoms of the disease of PTSD (Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder) the authors conclude with a question, “…has PTSlaveryD played out and evolved into a chronic condition that can be labeled Chronic Traumatic Disorder (CTSD)?”

The answer to the question is a quick and resounding YES! Chronic employment, chronic incarceration, chronic lateness, chronic neglect of our children, chronic drop out from school & etc. these are because of the disease called Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder.

MANY CURES TO THE ILL DEFINED DISEASE

As a follower of the teachings of The Message of Elijah Muhammad, I believe his Message [knowledge] contain the cure (essence within the knowledge) all for the disease called PTSlaveryD. Other remedies that propose to unravel the mental disorders caused by the traumatic event called the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, are just slivers of The Message. However, as stated above, having the KNOWLEDGE is not enough.

“Enough” will be when we, who would lead and elevate our people, find a way to get them to understand that we are dealing with the after effects of Chattel Slavery. In effect, the “Crime Against Humanity” caused the disease called PTslaveryD. It has been codified and identified as a disease.

LACK OF RESOURCES IS A REASON

BUT MUST NOT BE USED AS AN EXCUSE

From the understanding of the knowledge will come the wisdom to seek out ways and means to put the precious Black mind back in order. It will not be easy, it need not be easy, and it need not be done all at once. But there are Black professionals, and some others who can do the job; they are trained to put the mind back in order.

This is true. There are some absolutely great minds and medical doctors: psychiatrist, psychologist and other professionals who can do the job. But they cannot do the job for lack of resources. And this is a great place to introduce yet another reason why Reparations must be paid to Black people or we shall never be free in any ways related to the pillars that a people must enjoy if we are to be classed as a Free people. Those pillars are Self Determination/Self-identity & etc.

With the payment of our Reparations our professionals would be granted the resources to develop a cure for PTslaveryD. However, as we have stated previously, “Reparations will not be used to prosecute our case for Reparations.” Nor can we wait, OR ARE we waiting for Reparations to begin to cure this disease ( www.ncobra.org ) But those of us who are applying the wisdom to get our people to act in their own best interest are handicapped because of the disease. The affect of “Willie Lynch”  teachings are played out in “real time” in every Black organization.

RECOMMENDED  WAY TO PROCEED

Since the program in The Message of Elijah Muhammad have, arguably, been the most successful in uniting the power of Black people to achieve common objectives, we can reasonably state the Leaders of The Nation of Islam are using more of the cure for PTslaveryD than any others. However, the malady is so pervasive that even here, leaders must deal with the same symptoms that are present in the “general” population. But it is easier to get more done to empower the Race than in any other group. But help is needed here also.

We must reach out to outstanding Black professionals, who have already demonstrated their willingness to serve – by serving – come together and use The Message of Elijah Muhammad to extract a cure for PTslaveryD. Of course the one calling them together will be critical. The only one I think have the credibility and stature to make such a call is The National Representative of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad: Minister Louis Farrakhan.

To begin, the three professionals I believe Minister Farrakhan could successfully bring together for such a project are: Dr. Na’im Akbar, Dr. Omar Reid and Sister Dr. Joy Leary.   These Doctors will be given the clerical and other support needed to do the job.

Meanwhile as it become more obvious to Black people that a cure is needed to take advantage of great opportunities, if we can get our people to act mentally correct, there will be a temptation to seek out remedies that are not  targeted specifically to Black people.  But no remedy devised by any white professional – alone – will do the job. Collaboration with Black professionals may be used to good advantage, but that will be up to the Black professionals in the assessments of their needs.

This statement will be widely circulated, including to Final Call Newspaper. We also mean for this article to start a conversation about a cure for PTslaveryD: so hopefully it will be read in the light of understanding that I am only reporting of my assessments of what we can do to advance the Liberation Struggle of Black people – maybe advance beyond the finish line.

NBRA (National Black Reparations Alliance)

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL BLACK REPARATIONS ALLIANCE?

The National Black Reparations Alliance is an alliance of Black people who believe three (3) aspects of the Great Issue MUST be addressed or any payment, or demand made in the name REPARATIONS is a misnomer: Therefore, Reparations for Black people must address the clear choice of 1) Black people who will be restored to the extent they will have a choice, but will elect to remain in the USA 2) Black people who will be restored but will elect to return to Africa or choose to go elsewhere and 3) Black people who will be restored but will elect to settle in the territory of individuals who want the vision of a independent Black nation in the five southern states in the USA.
We are not against any Black people, but are for the entire National Black Community having the choice to decide their own destiny. Otherwise anything paid that does not fit the classic, internationally defined definition of what Reparations is, in fact, cannot be so…

DECEMBER FAST DECLARED BY
 THE HONORABLE
ELIJAH MUHAMMAD
by H. Khalif Khalifah

-----------------------
12/1/07

This is to say to all within my reach that I still observe the fast that was declared by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I have observed the month of December to varying degrees of success for 33 years. I always attempt to participate in it 100% through my every word, act and deed. And though this is an impossibility, the striving have help keep me as close to the straight and narrow path that I am. I have been abundantly blessed by Allah when I forget, go into error or make a mistake. And I have concluded that the grea-test blessing of all is that I turn to The Creator, Sustainer and Cherisher of all persons, places and things for help. So after 33 years of striv-ing, I believe I am in the position in life that I have the best chance of being 100% dutiful dur-ing this month I pray for success for everyone who is participating, ob-serving or sensitive to Black Muslims during this time. Ultimately, I  fast for the power to be a better servant to African people, as we continue to struggle for “Freedom, Justice and Equality”………..Peace, Khalifah, December 1, 2007 I www. reparationswarchest.com

New Book About N'COBRA and the Reparations Movement
A History of N'COBRA and the Reparations Movement, by H. KHALIF KHALIFAH, is first published book about the Coalition that put Reparations in the minds, hearts of many, and lips of people in the U. S. A. and around the world. It is the first Book that is written about N'COBRA by one of it's leaders during the peak of its growth in the 1990's.

Khalifah served on the National Board of Directors for six years, was Co-Chair of the Human Services Commission for five years, Facilitated a Media Workshop that conceptionalized and formulated the N'Cobra listserv, served with Dr. Obadele and Cicero Love on the first Economic Development Commission (a workshop /committee, at the time) and was the co-ordinator for the 9th Annual Reparations Convention in Hampton, and Southampton, Virginia in 1998.

His book is illustrated with multiple, color pictures to highlight many of the 16 Conventions of N'COBRA; and also contains a good chronicle of Past Conventions. It is 230 pages and cost $15.00. Go to www.khabooks.com

As U.S. political, civil and business leaders grappled with the pressing question of "what to do with the Negroes?" the newly freed Africans cried out immediately for restitution - payback for centuries of stolen labor, cultural degradation and dehumanizations. Indeed, Africans held as slaves have been struggling for a restored sense of wholeness since being brought to this country as chattel.

Other organizations and individuals have carried the demand for reparations farther into the twentieth century. Many of them have become a part of today's Reparations Campaign which is being spearheaded by N'COBRA.
